Do not be afraid to lift BIG weights at any age. Our Kettering member, Sharon, shows us that it doesn’t matter what age, you can achieve anything
Sharon is hitting a milestone age this year and will be hitting fifty looking and feeling amazing!
Sharon contacted Franky, a Level 3 Personal Trainer and a Level 4 S&C Coach at our Kettering Gym, to obtain advice on weight training as being a hard-core cardio bunny, she didn’t know where to start when it came to lifting.
Franky says ‘it is really important for women to incorporate strength training into their training programme. From the age of 30 our bone density decreases. Sometimes at a rate of 1% per year to begin with, and our risk of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis tends to be higher than our male counterparts’
Many women have the misconception that strength training will make them look bulky and masculine when this really could not be further from the truth (unless of course this is the desired look).
The more lean muscle we carry, the more calories we burn at rest.
This is because muscle is a metabolically active. Fat burning tissue that burns more calories pound for pound than fatty tissue.
Franky says ‘I have been incorporating some big lifts into Sharon’s training such as Deadlifts, Power Cleans and Jerks. These type of lifts incorporate multiple muscle groups and promote explosive power and strength into her programme. Not only are these type of lifts functional. They help develop speed, co-ordination, flexibility and total body strength which are all fundamental important factors to work on as we age’
Sharon says ‘I’d wanted to try lifting for a while but needed to make sure I approached it in a safe way and to be honest, had thought it all a little bit intimidating! Thankfully Franky has shown me correct form, easing me into some of the more difficult moves with such support and encouragement and I can honestly say I love it, the feeling of achievement is great and noticing differences in my body quite early on is especially rewarding!’
