Mark shows us the positive impacts the gym can have on your mental health. Mark begins by saying:

Fitness has been a big part of my life for many years, as a boy I sprinted for my county and ended up at the AAA’s championships at Crystal Palace, I was also a springboard and platform diver for the county too.

Growing up I was abused. I kept it a secret my whole life, trying to just live as normal a life as I could. When I got older, I thought I had put it behind me. It was affecting my life in a lot of ways, slowly creeping up on me.

This began with anxiety, then depression. It got worse and worse. I stopped doing everything, just getting through the days was so tough. The weight piled on me as I sort for comfort in food. Barely moving off the sofa, then my dear dad died. This led to a breakdown.

I knew I had to do something or I was not going to be here much longer.

I looked at myself in the mirror, I was disgusted at what looked back at me. My dad had said to me before he died he was worried about my health.  I was nearly 21 stone at this point. This was 3 years ago.

It took me everything I had to walk through the doors of the first gym I joined. I firstly felt embarrassed but as the days went on I noticed things starting to change, and one of the biggest changes was with my mental health. The gym has been great therapy for my mind and body. I still have a way to go but I’m getting there.

I have been a Simply Gym Bedford for a year now and I enjoy it immensely, great gym, great atmosphere and staff!
