We have all heard of Zumba…and Pilates…and Body Rock…there have actually been quite a few fitness crazes over the years. Bokwa is the newest kid on the block, but is it any good?
So What Is Bokwa?
The name itself gives you a good idea as to what is involved. ‘Bo’ is a form of boxing, and ‘Kwa’ is taken from ‘Kwaito’; a traditional South African style of dancing. So dance-boxing is what you can expect, but there is more to it than that. Bokwa was created by an L.A-based fitness instructor, Paul Mavi, and differs from other workouts in that there is no strict choreography, no traditional steps to learn, and it is not too taxing (though you can still expect to burn between 1,200 and 1,300 calories in a single workout).
What Kind of Workout Can I Expect?
Fitness experts describe Bokwa as a fitness regime combining muscular, flexibility and cardio-respiratory workouts. Although it differs from Zumba in style and structure, it ultimately offers a similar cardiovascular workout. Expect to increase strength, improve blood flow and reduce muscular tension. Furthermore it is said to be an easier and more accessible workout as a Bokwa class involves using the body and the feet to spell out words and letters – instead of a strict and structured workout.
It sounds great, and it offers an impressive calorie burn. But more than that it looks like an incredible amount of fun; just what is needed to get people exercising! But don’t just take our word for it, take a look at the video and see for yourself.
